Aims & Philosophy
In the College, we have many pupils with a keen interest in things technological, and it is one of our aims to allow this interest to expand and develop. One way of doing so is by providing opportunities for the pupils to experience electronics, through clubs and qualifications, and often it becomes an interest or hobby that they continue with at home. Of those who have studied the subject, several have gone on to an exciting and rewarding career in engineering or a related discipline.
Course Content
We run an initial electronics club for Year 7, one lunch time per week, where they learn soldering techniques and often develop their interest into a hobby. Older pupils meet more often in separate clubs to continue with more complicated projects. In the current year, every Year 8 pupil will have an electronics course built into their curriculum, as an introduction to the subject. A GCSE course in Electronics is currently being run, in both Year 10 and Year 11, with enthusiastic groups who are very keen to expand their knowledge of the subject into an actual qualification. The GCSE course involves the design and testing of electronic circuits, and includes considerable practical work.
Resources
The electronics courses and clubs are run in a dedicated electronics laboratory, which is well furnished and equipped. A full range of measurement and test instruments are available, as well as facilities for teaching control by computer. We keep a wide range of components for project work, and are able to fabricate printed circuit boards by photo-etching techniques when required
