Aims & Philosophy
The College's English teaching is in line with National Curriculum requirements, using new textbooks geared to National Curriculum objectives and the Framework for the Teaching of English. There is a brand new range of novels, short stories and plays for classes in Years 7 - 9.

We place strong emphasis on accuracy in written work, although oral work is a vital part of English teaching: as well as regular work in the classroom we hold an annual Spoken English Competition and a Poetry Speaking Competition.  In addition, we hold a Creative Writing Competition each year.

All Year 11 students take English Language and English Literature GCSE, combining exams, course work and oral assessments. In the Sixth Form we teach A Level English Literature; students in the Lower Sixth take their AS course, completing three modules (two exams, and one coursework component) by the end of their Lower Sixth year. Most will continue with three further modules in the Upper Sixth to complete their A level course. We aim to encourage our students' understanding and enjoyment of English language and literature. The department works closely with the school librarian and we organise regular theatre visits. We provide extra tuition for pupils with learning difficulties.
